01 The headline
Europe now has exactly 492 GTM Engineers. We counted every one.
If you think "GTM Engineer" is still a Silicon Valley curiosity, too new and too niche to matter in Europe, the data disagrees with you. "GTM Engineer" is arguably the first revenue job title created largely by AI: someone who builds leverage inside a revenue team, automating targeting, enrichment, outreach and routing with tools like Clay, n8n and LLM agents instead of adding headcount. Two years ago it barely existed as a category. Today it is a real, fast-forming labour market, the world's second largest after the US. Here is what the data shows, and what to do about it whether you are building, hiring or investing.
Key insights
Europe has 492 identifiable GTM Engineers across 29 countries and 402 employers.
Role starts grew 13x in two years, from about 33 in 2023 to 446 in 2025.
Engineers and data professionals are the top feeder at 17%, ahead of sales and marketing.
The UK, France and Germany hold roughly 49% of all European GTM Engineers.
For every titled GTM Engineer, roughly 34 people already do the work under another name.
73% carry a bare IC title, showing there is no seniority ladder yet.
This is not an estimate, and it is not a survey extrapolation. It is 492 identifiable individuals across 29 countries, working for 402 distinct employers, measured on the TechTree workforce knowledge graph in June 2026. A genuine market has crystallised in roughly 24 months, and it has a distinctly European shape: smaller, more technical, and more outsourced than America's. Europe's 492 represent about 28% of the identifiable global pool, sitting roughly a year behind the US in absolute volume but pacing it on growth. Behind, not out of the race.
02 Market velocity
33 to 446 in two years: the growth curve just broke.
Before 2024, Europe added a trickle of GTM Engineers, a handful a quarter, mostly experiments. If you were watching then, you could have written this role off. Do not make that mistake now: the curve breaks with 13x growth in two years, a step-change, not a spike.
European role starts grew from roughly 33 in 2023 to about 135 in 2024.
They reached around 446 in 2025, a 13x increase in two years.
Quarterly starts crossed 100 in Q1 2025 and have held there since.
European and US quarterly GTM Engineer role starts, Q1 2022 to Q1 2026. Q1 2026 is a partial data point: recent hires lag as profiles update, so the final value understates true activity.
Quarterly starts crossed 100 in Q1 2025 and have not dropped below it since. Europe is not experimenting with this role anymore, it is staffing for it.
Do not be fooled by the percentages slowing down. Year on year, European role starts grew about 309% from 2023 to 2024, then about 230% from 2024 to 2025. That deceleration is normal and healthy: it is what happens when a base gets bigger while absolute additions keep climbing. Europe is pacing the global market, which saw a 205% jump in new GTM jobs in 2025, with over 3,000 GTM-engineering roles on LinkedIn by January 2026, roughly double the mid-2025 figure.
The driver is identical on both sides of the Atlantic: B2B customer-acquisition cost has risen to roughly $2.00 of sales-and-marketing spend for every $1.00 of new ARR, and AI tooling matured enough in 2024 that someone technical was needed to wire it all together. Europe is riding the same wave as the US, about a year behind in absolute volume, on a comparable growth slope. If you are budgeting for GTM headcount and ignoring that ratio, you are solving the wrong problem.
03 Feeder DNA
In Europe, the top feeder is engineering, not sales.
Write a job description that starts with sales experience and you will miss the strongest candidates. Among classifiable backgrounds, engineers and data professionals are the single largest source of GTM Engineers, at about 17%, ahead of marketing and growth and sales and BD. Europe's GTM Engineer skews closer to the literal meaning of the word.
Engineers and data professionals lead at about 17% of classifiable backgrounds.
Marketing and growth follow at 14%, tied with sales and BD at 14%.
That is the opposite of the American pattern, where sales and marketing lead and operators outnumber engineers.
Previous role, immediately before becoming a GTM Engineer. Classified prior roles, n=437.
At 17%, engineers and data professionals are the single largest feeder into this role. A sourcing brief written for sales backgrounds is fishing in the wrong pond first.
The more interesting finding is what does not dominate. European GTM Engineers arrive from five roughly comparable backgrounds, none of them a majority. That spread is itself the signal: when a role draws evenly from many directions, it is a genuine convergence point, not a rebadging of one existing job. Look closer and there is a second signal hiding in the long tail: an automation-native feeder. Prior titles like "Clay Expert," "Clay Creator," "cold email and automation specialist" and certified-partner roles for outbound tools show up repeatedly. This feeder did not exist three years ago. It is being created in real time by the same tools that created the role.
Background classification is directional, not exact. Roughly 32% of prior roles could not be confidently classified and sit in an "other or unclassified" bucket.
04 Geography
Three countries hold half of Europe's GTM Engineers.
If your search starts and ends in one capital, you are competing for the same short list everyone else already found. The UK, France and Germany together hold roughly 49% of all GTM Engineers on the continent. At city level the concentration is sharper still: London leads with 69, well ahead of Paris at 42, with a German axis of Berlin (24) and Munich (17) behind. A dense second tier follows: Barcelona (23), Amsterdam (20) and Brussels (19).
Share of 492 current European GTM Engineers, by country.
Top metro areas, current GTM Engineers by count.
London alone holds 69 GTM Engineers, more than Berlin and Munich combined. A single-city search misses that the next tier, Barcelona, Amsterdam and Brussels, is already dense enough to source from.
That footprint is not random. It mirrors where the Clay, n8n and AI-outbound communities are most active. Look further out and the more forward-looking finding sits at the edges: emerging hubs are already on the map. Warsaw (11), Belgrade (8) and Lisbon (8) all register today. The role is spreading east and south into markets that do not usually lead a new commercial category, not just clustering in the traditional core. Get there before the search gets crowded.
City and small-country counts are a snapshot of observable profiles, not a census, and small-cell figures shift as the underlying data refreshes.
05 Shadow supply
For every titled GTM Engineer, 34 people already do the work.
Insist on the exact title and you have boxed yourself into a shortage that does not actually exist. If you only hire people who already call themselves "GTM Engineer," the whole continent gives you 492 people. It sounds like an impossible shortage. It is not.
For every titled GTM Engineer, roughly 34 people already do the closest version of the work under another name.
That is about 16,900 builders: Clay and n8n operators, outbound-systems specialists, and growth and marketing engineers.
Hiring on the badge alone means competing over a pool of just 492 people.
Shadow supply by function: adjacent people already doing the work, identified by title keyword and deduplicated per person.
Roughly 16,900 people already do this work under another name. Insisting on the exact job title shrinks a sourcing pool by a factor of 34 for no good reason.
Widen the lens further, to the full adjacent pool, adding GTM-titled operators and RevOps, Sales Ops and Marketing Ops, and the figure reaches roughly 61,000, about 124x the titled pool. Scarcity here is a titling artefact, not a true supply ceiling. The skill is not rare. The label is new. Employers who insist on the badge are competing over 492 people. Employers who recruit on the capability are choosing from tens of thousands.
These adjacency buckets are deliberately broad convert pools, identified by title keywords and deduplicated per person. Treat the exact bucket boundaries as directional rather than precise.

06 Title versus seniority
73% carry a bare IC title. There is no ladder yet.
Do not trust the title to tell you what you need to know. 73% of European GTM Engineers carry a bare "GTM Engineer" IC title, with no seniority modifier. It tells you almost nothing about whether someone is a first-week hire or a five-year operator.
73% hold a bare IC title with no seniority modifier.
Senior, lead, manager and director levels barely register.
Evidence of shipped systems, such as Clay and n8n builds, enrichment pipelines and outbound automations, is the only seniority signal that currently exists.
Title-level breakdown of current European GTM Engineers, n=492. Nearly 13% are already founders or fractional operators, and about 20% are hired remotely by US-HQ'd firms competing for the same people.
Hire the builder, not the badge. Europe's strongest GTM Engineers are coming out of engineering and data seats, so a search that starts and ends in sales will miss them. And by the time a strong candidate surfaces, someone in San Francisco has likely already found them.
07 Demand side
VCs: an early GTM Engineer hire is an efficiency signal.
Watch which portfolio companies make this hire early. It is a tell. The role is being adopted one experimental hire at a time by young, technical companies, and a GTM Engineer's entire job is to attack the ratio squeezing portfolio margins everywhere.
Median founding year is 2021, with 57% of employers founded since 2020.
Median headcount is up about 9% in the last year.
The ratio being attacked: roughly $2.00 of sales-and-marketing spend for every $1.00 of new ARR.
Employer archetype among classifiable employers of European GTM Engineers.
About 44% of classifiable employers carrying the role are marketing, advertising or consulting firms, versus roughly 35% product companies. Europe is partly outsourcing GTM engineering as a service, a rational response to thin supply, and that layer is itself an investable category on its own. The real white space is the enterprise segment: only about 4% of European GTM Engineers work at companies of 1,000-plus, versus 57% at micro-companies under 50. The enterprise wave has barely begun here, and whoever moves first captures it.
The product-versus-services split relies on title classification and is directional. Company size, founding year and growth figures are high confidence.
08 Strategic recommendations
What to do before your next hire or check
A market that grew 13x in two years and still has no seniority ladder is a market where the badge and the skill are not the same thing. Here is what that means for the three groups deciding whether to hire, fund or place someone into this role.
Strategic planning assumptions
Through 2027, European GTM Engineer role starts will keep growing in absolute terms each year, with quarterly starts holding above the 100 mark first crossed in Q1 2025.High confidence
Through 2028, the pool of people doing GTM engineering work under adjacent titles will remain at least an order of magnitude larger than the titled pool, keeping capability-based sourcing the cheaper route.High confidence
Through 2028, the bare IC title will still describe the majority of European GTM Engineers: no standard seniority ladder for the role will have formed by then.Moderate confidence
For founders
Hire against the $2.00 to $1.00 sales-and-marketing-to-ARR ratio, not a job description copied from a US posting.
Recruit from engineering and data seats first. They are the largest classifiable feeder at 17%, ahead of sales and marketing.
Write seniority into the offer, not the title. With 73% of the market carrying a bare IC label, evidence of shipped Clay or n8n systems is the only real signal.
For investors
Treat an early GTM Engineer hire as an efficiency signal. Median employer founding year is 2021, and 57% were founded since 2020.
Watch the enterprise segment as the open white space. Only about 4% of European GTM Engineers currently sit inside companies of 1,000-plus.
Back the outsourced layer deliberately. At 44% of classifiable employers, agencies and consultancies are already treating GTM engineering as a service line.
For recruiters and talent leaders
Widen the search past the exact title. Roughly 16,900 people already do the closest version of the work under another name.
Prioritize London, Paris and the German axis of Berlin and Munich first, then move to the denser second tier of Barcelona, Amsterdam and Brussels.
Watch emerging hubs early. Warsaw, Belgrade and Lisbon already register on the map and are cheaper to source from before they get competitive.

09 Method & confidence
How we counted 492: a defensible talent number.
Trust the 492 because you can audit how we got there. Every figure is computed on the TechTree workforce knowledge graph, a periodically refreshed talent graph of over 1 billion deduplicated profiles and 1.3 billion role records, built on public LinkedIn and Crunchbase signal. The population is defined before any chart is drawn: all role records whose title matches a GTM Engineer variant ("GTM Engineer," "Go-to-Market Engineer," "GTM Engineering" and inflections), filtered to current roles across 29 European countries spanning the EU and EEA, the UK, Switzerland and the Western Balkans.
Trajectory uses role start dates. Composition uses each person's immediately prior role by sequence. US comparisons use identical definitions and the same source, so the two markets are genuinely comparable. The number that results: 492 current European GTM Engineers, resolving to 450 distinct individuals, across 402 distinct employers, in a June 2026 snapshot.
Four rules governed the count: no averages without distributions, so every headline number ships with its n-count; titles are evidence, not truth, so seniority is read from history, not the label; inclusion criteria are named up front; and segmentation is repeatable, so the same query re-derives the same cohort tomorrow. This is a defensible snapshot of observable profiles, not a census. Small-cell country and city counts will shift as the data refreshes, and we say so. Data as of 24 June 2026, drawn from the TechTree workforce knowledge graph.
