London alone holds 3,011 profiles more than France, Netherlands & Spain combined.

Underrated hub

Berlin shows the highest median career score (7.18) of any large hub above London or Paris.

Then comes the title problem.

90% of the European AI pool is genuinely senior by years of experience. But job titles massively under-state seniority most “AI engineers” are 8+ years in.

Almost half of candidates who reach final interviews never receive an offer. Slow loops + comp recalibration are the largest causes.

Hires close 2.4× more often when the hiring manager has ≥6 years applied AI experience and the team already includes ≥1 ex-FAANG or VC-backed AI engineer.

Build vs buy the inflection

Below ~12 AI engineers, external velocity (agency / freelance / contractor) outperforms internal recruiting on cost-per-hire and time-to-productivity.

Above ~25 AI engineers, internal sourcing + a dedicated talent intelligence layer wins decisively. The in-between is where most companies waste 18–24 months of leadership attention.
