01 The headline
The narrative says startups and ex-Google researchers. The data says banks and consultancies.
Everyone agrees Poland is an AI engine room for Europe. Ask who is actually running AI there and almost nobody has an answer. We reconstructed the population from primary workforce data, every person whose current role in Poland carries a Head of, Director of, VP of, or Chief AI Officer title, and the composition looks nothing like the startup story you would expect. Here is what the data shows, and what it means if you are building, hiring or investing in Poland's AI market.

02 The boom
From a curiosity to a standard hire in five years.
Chart the year each current AI leader started their present role and the shape tells you everything. Annual appointments went from 15 in 2020 to 238 in 2025, a sudden jump rather than a gradual ramp, and this is now a standard hire, not an experiment.
GenAI productisation reached Poland's enterprises at scale.
The EU AI Act pushed formal AI governance roles into being.
The global Chief AI Officer wave hit Poland's capability centres at the same time.

03 Title composition
Head of AI and Director of AI carry five in six of the titles.
Four titles cover the entire cohort, and the org chart tells a story of its own. "Head of AI" and "Director of AI" dominate; the Chief AI Officer title is still small in absolute numbers but is the fastest-growing category globally, and Poland's enterprises are already importing that template.

04 Feeder companies
Recycled from consulting and big-iron, not imported from FAANG.
Rank the most common prior employers across the cohort and a clear pattern emerges, one most founders get backwards. Accenture leads with 27 alumni, then Procter & Gamble (24), IBM (20) and Orange Polska (19). Global consulting, enterprise IT and banking dominate the feeder set. Google and Microsoft each account for only about 10, so stop hunting there first.

05 Dual DNA
Half scientist, half operator, and 18% hold a PhD.
Engineering is the single most common field of study at 254 people. But business, economics and finance combined come to roughly 261, near-parity with the technical track. Read that as a signal, not a coincidence: this is a translator role, and the credential density confirms it.
271 leaders hold a Master's as their highest degree.
120 leaders hold a doctorate.

06 University pedigree
A Warsaw technical-plus-economics axis feeds the pipeline.
Warsaw University of Technology (97) and the University of Warsaw (74) lead, with the Warsaw School of Economics (56) close behind, confirming the dual-DNA pattern at the pipeline level: this market is bred, not imported.
AGH Kraków and Wrocław University of Science and Technology tie for fourth.
One anomaly: Belarusian State University appears in the top 20 feeders with 11 leaders.
This is a visible marker of the post-2020 inflow of senior Belarusian and Ukrainian technical talent into Poland's AI economy.

07 Geography
Warsaw is the gravity well; four hubs back it.
52% of the cohort sits in the Warsaw metro, home to the banks, capability-centre headquarters, Big Four and multinationals that drive demand for AI leadership. Start your search there, and expect to pay Warsaw prices.
Kraków, the largest shared-services cluster in Central and Eastern Europe, forms a credible second hub.
Wrocław, Gdańsk and Poznań feed technical depth beneath it at lower comp pressure.
Distinct AI leaders by metro area. 75 leaders were not precisely geolocated and are excluded.
Warsaw alone holds 52% of the cohort, more than the next four hubs combined. Everywhere else is the discount option.
08 Liquidity
A young cohort that is already in motion.
Heads of AI exist in Poland in real numbers. That was never the problem. The problem is that they are newly placed, in demand, and easy to move: median time in role is just 1.65 years, and roughly 30% carry a High or Very High modelled flight-risk score. Knowing which third is in play matters more than knowing the total headcount.

Stop waiting for a unicorn ex-FAANG hire. That profile barely exists in this 658-person population, and holding out for one costs you a hiring cycle.
Target the credible profile instead: a consulting- or bank-trained operator with a technical degree. 240 of 658 leaders already come from that background, so you are not fighting the market, you are following it.
Look to Wrocław and Gdańsk for technical depth at lower comp pressure than Warsaw, which holds 52% of the cohort and prices accordingly.

Treat a credentialed, low-flight-risk Head of AI from a regulated-industry background as a measurable de-risking signal against this 658-person baseline.

Pure individual-contributor titles are excluded, yielding 658 people across 674 role instances, as of 29 June 2026.
Employment and title history, geography, education, tenure and prior employers are Tier 1 confidence and used aggressively throughout. Modelled salary, seniority index and flight-risk scores are Tier 2, directionally reliable but treated as estimates. Sparse, self-reported fields are Tier 3 and are not used as the basis for any headline claim. Data as of 29 June 2026, drawn from the TechTree workforce knowledge graph.
